I purchased the S170, and within 13 hours, the first belt broke. The local dealership fixed it, and now at just over a year of ownership, belt number 2 broke at 33.8 hours. I store it inside and clear debris after each use. If I am going to keep using it, I will need a new belt each year it seems. Except for the mowing, everything else works great.
At first, it was great! Plenty of power to go up my hilly backyard. Cut great, turned good, did the job. Then on the 3rd mow, the cutting deck belt broke. I’ve now spent several hours with a home improvement store trying to get a replacement, and finally settled for a return/refund. I’m very disappointed and frustrated.
I bought this in June of 2023. I mow a 7.5-acre, a 6-acre, and 2-acre lawns, plus a couple of 1-acre lawns. The S170 performs well, especially on steep parts. It cuts well, turns sharply, and fits in places the X570 doesn’t. I bag everything when mowing. The bags are the same, so I can swap them. I added LED lights for mowing in the dark. After about 45 hours this year, it’s still running strong with the original belts and blades.
I have always been a Craftsman guy, but my last one failed me after only 7 years. This has been my first experience with John Deere, and it has performed like a Swiss watch. I highly recommend this tractor to anyone looking for a new one!
This tractor is not a typical John Deere tractor. NOT RELIABLE, and the warranty is extremely difficult to get any help with. The gas pump valve is faulty after a couple of months of use. Almost impossible to get a new one from them.
